Why not move a dresser or book shelf to the end of the bed for now? That way the barrier is there.

Wal-mart has some that you tuck under the mattress and tie on the other side. They work great and they aren't that expensive ($20). That is what we use on my 18 month old's bottom bunk.

Perhaps this will work:
https://www.jansenmedical.net/EZ-Adjust-Bed-Rail-Standers-pr-4664.html

I have no personal knowledge of it, just did a search.
You can add padding yourself as I have never heard of padded guard rails for adult beds--infants yes, adults never seen such a thing though it might exist--a hospital nurse might know.
Good luck. If that does not work, contact your local Area Agency on Aging (listed like that in phone book) and tell them what you need and they hopefully have someone who can give you the name of a company that provides an appropriate one.

If you mean a hospital type bed, you can call your local senior center, as they have medical supplies that they loan to senior citizens. They will probably refuse the mattress, but they may take the bed.
Otherwise, try a homeless shelter, same caveat.

You generally cannot donate mattresses. The organizations won't take them because of the chance that "bodily fluids" got on it at some point. Put it on Craigslist or another site as free to someone who needs it.
